Functional Nutrition

The average health care practitioner spends very little time with his/her patients’.  This poses a serious problem for those seeking treatment.  A 45 minute office visit to the doctor that includes only 5 minutes with the doctor and 40 minutes waiting is dangerous to your health.  Our office is structured so that Dr. Osborne can spend quality time with each patient without rushing anyone through.
The practice of functional diagnostic medicine utilizes cutting edge, research driven, laboratory testing, meticulous patient examination, and comprehensive history taking to evaluate and treat patients as individuals not as disease states.  Functional diagnostic medicine is the future of health care.  Unfortunately, for many people, it is not the present.
Your health (good or bad) is a product of the genes you were born with and the environment you surround yourself with (also known as Phenotypic expression).
The cells of your body respond to the environment around you.  For example, you need adequate clean air, clean water, wholesome and nutritious foods, sunlight, exercise, love, and shelter in order to maintain good health.  If you travel to Mexico and drink infected water, your body becomes ill.  Breathing in polluted air can increase your risk for cancer and many other diseases.  A diet full of poor food choices will ultimately lead to early disease (diabetes, heart disease, etc).  Lack of sunlight can increase your risk of 16 different cancers, cause depression, elevate your cholesterol levels, and increase your risk of catching the flu… We can go on and on about how the wrong environment for your genes can make you sick, but I think the point is made.  Nutritional and functional diagnostic medicine addresses all of these issues.

Functional laboratory testing VS. static laboratory testing:

DNA ManMost traditional medical lab tests are static.  An analogy of static testing would be like taking a picture of a football scoreboard at halftime.  You know what the score is but you do not know who wins the game.  You only have a “snapshot” of a static moment in time.  Nutrient levels have historically been measured using blood serum.  These measurements are known to fluctuate drastically from day to day depending on diet, stress, and other factors; therefore they do not provide an accurate measure of a person’s true nutritional status.

Functional tests are based on biochemical outcomes.  For example, to detect nutritional deficiencies, Town Center Wellness uses a patented technology based on 17 years of research at the University of Texas.  The tests measures intracellular vitamin stores (Spectracell) based on the ability of your cells to grow.

This test can detect vitamin, mineral, and other nutrient deficiencies that commonly go undetected with traditional medical testing.  In addition, there are literally hundreds of other functional diagnostic laboratory tests that Dr. Osborne can utilize to help identify underlying nutritional problems.  Some of these include hormone and neurotransmitter testing, genetic testing, gluten testing, food allergy panels, toxic element testing, and more.
