Pain Medications Cause Joint Pain & Joint Damage

Wednesday, May 7th, 2014

Back pain is the second most common condition that people visit their doctor for.  Likewise, prescriptions medications to treat pain are often the first line o treatment recommended by doctors.  Unfortunately, pain medications do little to address the actual origin of the pain and serve more to mask the outward symptoms.  The consequences of long term pain medications on healing and nutritional status are discussed in this Web Wellness University video below…

Prescription Drugs for Pain Don’t Solve the Problem

Drugs only mask inflammation, they do not correct the source. Many pain meds also cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies. This side effect can prevent long term healing. For example, NSAIDS (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can cause folic acid and vitamin C deficiency. Both of these vitamins are crucial for the body to be able to repair damaged cartilage, joints, tendons, and ligaments. See the diagram below:

Most, doctors specializing in the treatment of arthritis, joint pain, back pain, neck pain, and other diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system never even consider diet as an important factor in the development of these conditions. I was formally trained in rheumatology at the VA hospital in Houston, TX, and I can say that diet and nutritional recommendations to patients were discouraged and in most cases frowned upon by our attending physicians.  It was actually this experience that prompted me to dig deeper into the connection between join/muscle  diseases and food.

Over the past 10 years, I have treated thousands of patients with arthritic conditions. The most single effective therapies have always been diet and exercise. The paradox with exercise… It is harder to stick to if it flares up the arthritis. The problem with food…everyone reacts uniquely based on their own unique chemistry. But it only makes sense that if drugs can target inflammation as a treatment, why can’t food. After all, isn’t food a drug of sorts?

I have found that medical research greatly supports this connection, but more importantly, I have found that patients get better after eliminating inflammatory foods from their diets. What foods should we avoid to help recover from arthritis?  Depends on the person. Everyone is unique.

Problems That Benefit With The Right Diet Changes:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Muscle spasms
  • Stiff man’s syndrome
  • Degenerative disc disease, disc herniations
  • Sprain/Strains
  • Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow
  • Chronic Repetitive Injuries
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Lupus
  • spondyloarthritis
  • psoriatic
  • reactive arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Scleroderma
  • Myofascitis
  • Dermatomyositis

If you suffer with a chronic pain condition and have been using medications with little benefit, try finding a functional medicine doctor.

Wishing you excellent health,

Drug Induced Nutritional Loss – A Threat to Your Health

The Road to Recovery Requires Re-evaluation…

Many of you who are trying to recover your health may not have looked at your medications as a potential to create nutritional deficits and subsequently create health problems. Often times the health problems caused by nutritional deficits are the same issues that we are being prescribed a medication for in the first place.  This can lead to long term confusion and failure to address the full scope of our illnesses.  Fox News recently interviewed me on this very vital health topic…

Houston weather, traffic, news | FOX 26 | MyFoxHouston

Your Doctor Should Consider Nutrition

Regardless of the medication being used, your doctor should consider the potential for long term vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Failure to do so can lead to additional health problems for you. The following diagram illustrates a common example (high blood pressure patients) of the cycle I see in patients trying to recover from gluten:

healing from gluten damage - consider medications

Is a Multi Vitamin Enough?

Although a good place to start, a multi vitamin is not always enough to correct these deficiencies. Often times a therapeutic dose is required to overcome the deficit. The best thing you can do is to have your doctor run appropriate lab testing to measure for vitamin and mineral deficiencies every 6 months for as long as you are taking the medication(s).

The Gluten Free Diet Needs a Definition Overhaul

The Term Gluten is Evolving as More & More Research is Done

I was recently invited to speak about gluten and food allergies on Fox News.  In the interview, I discuss some of the newer research pertaining to gluten sensitivity.  Additionally, I discuss how many legumes (soy, peanuts, etc) can create the same type of damage as gluten.  I also referred to a new research study has identified 2  forms of corn gluten that trigger an immune response in patients with gluten sensitivity.  You can watch the video below:

About the new study on corn maize (gluten)

Two forms of corn gluten were found to stimulate an immune reaction is patients with gluten intolerance.  In a published report, the scientists stated:

some maize prolamins (zeins) contain amino acid sequences that resemble the wheat gluten immunodominant peptides…Results concur to indicate that relative abundance of these zeins, along with factors affecting their resistance to proteolysis, may be of paramount clinical relevance, and the use of maize in the formulation and preparation of gluten-free foods must be reevaluated in some cases of celiac disease.

This is not the first research study that has identified corn glutens as detrimental.  It is just the most recent.

Gluten Free Food Industry Needs To Make Changes

Gluten free substitute products are full of corn and corn byproducts.  For a comprehensive list of corn based ingredients go here <<< Aside from containing a detrimental form of gluten, corn is not a healthy staple food.  As a matter of fact, the U.S. government banned the sale of processed corn products in 1943 because they induce B-vitamin deficiency disease.  Today, this grain must be fortified with synthetic B-vitamins before being sold.  Does that sound healthy to you?
