Stretching & Exercise for Pain Reduction and Improved Health

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Functional Medicine uses the Triangle of Health ApproachStretching your muscles on a regular basis is crucial for maintaining good health.  The old adage – “use it or lose it” applies here.   Keeping your muscles active improves oxygen, blood flow, nutrient flow, and immune system function.

Additionally, it allows you to continue to stay active with less risk for injury.  Many of the people I see become patients at our clinic because they work desk jobs and have very little physical activity.  When they attempt to play during the weekend, they become injured (weekend warrior phenomena) because their joints and muscles are atrophied (shrunken due to lack of use).

Chiropractic Care Restores Joint and Muscle Function

Treatment of these injured individuals improves joint function, increases muscle strength and tone, and improves flexibility temporarily.  The problems set in again when a patient becomes inactive once treatment ends.

Don’t let yourself end up in this situation.  Stretching and exercise on a regular basis can keep you healthy and injury free.  Remember that exercise and physical activity account for a huge part of your overall health.

Benefits of Stretching and Exercise

  • weight loss
  • reduced risk of heart disease
  • lower blood pressure
  • lower cholesterol
  • reduced risk of diabetes
  • improved bone density
  • reduced risk of alzheimer’s
  • improved self image…

Another Stretch for Neck Pain

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Preventing Neck Problems –

When you spend a lot of time sitting at a desk or staring at a computer screen, muscle aches and pains are going to be a problem sooner or later.  Implementing stretch breaks during the day while at work is a useful tool for reducing these types of problems.  Remember that the benefits of stretching in the modern world are invaluable.

The Chicken Wing Stretch –

The “Chicken Wing” stretch helps to loosen up tight muscles in the neck, shoulder, and mid back.  If you sit at a desk for long periods of the day, add the stretch to your regiment.  I recommend that you perform this to reduce spasm and neck pain, but more importantly, I recommend that you perform this stretch regularly (every 30-45 minutes of sitting at a computer desk) throughout the day to prevent recurrence of neck problems.

Want more stretching for the neck?  Check out the smelly armpit…

Don’t Stop at Stretching –

Remember that although stretching is an important component to reducing pain and muscle spasm, increasing blood and nutrient flow into the muscles, and improving immune function, it needs to be coupled with regular exercise.  Don’t forget about our group exercise boot camp.  If you would like to try group exercise boot camp to see if it is a good fit for you, join us every Saturday at 1:00 pm for FREE.

Is Your Doctor Under the Influence of Drug Companies?

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Drug companies indirectly pay your doctor to prescribeCBS reports that drug companies pay doctors 57 billion dollars per year to push, teach, and promote their drugs.  This number is more than pharmacy companies spend on advertising.  Additionally the report sheds light on the fact that drug company funded research leads to biased and misleading research…

It is no big mystery that pharmacy has it’s hand in influencing medical research outcomes as well as influencing what is taught in medical school.  The association is a huge conflict of interest, and a huge problem in medicine today.  That is why so many people are seeking out functional medicine doctors.

Only with the use of meaningful treatments and patient education can we as a country overcome the health care crisis.  Insurance companies continue to pay for services that do not change patient outcomes or disease.  Yet, they ignore other types of treatment (nutritional included) that have a long term benefit to patients and reduce the overall health care costs directly and indirectly.

Kudos to CBS for reporting on this very important issue.

In good health,

Dr. Osborne
